As a result of participating in a quality music program, it is reasonable to expect that by the end of GRADE ONE, a student will demonstrate an understanding of the following:

  • Melody: Aurally identify upward/downward; high/low; skips/steps; experience major/minor tonality

  • Harmony: Experience accompaniment to melody; accompany melody with a simple ostinato or accompaniment pattern

  • Form: Aurally identify like/unlike phrases and patterns; call and response

  • Tone Color: Aurally identify and perform on classroom instruments; Use three vocal tone colors (speak, sing, whisper). Aurally identify one orchestral instrument family

  • Rhythm: Aurally identify fast/slow. Show a steady beat, strong beat and perform simple rhythm patterns by rote. Aurally identify short/long sounds

  • Expression: Aurally identify and perform very soft/soft/loud/very loud
